Prospectus - Training for teachers

The National Policy of Education has accorded high priority to the Early Childhood Care and Education scheme. The National Policy for Children (1974) declares that children are a ‘supremely important asset of the nation’ and that their ‘nurturance and solicitude’ are the responsibility of the nation.
Undoubtedly, Early childhood is a period of momentous significance for all people growing up in this dynamic, ever-changing world of today. There is no doubt that the family as a social unit is the child’s first teacher and shoulders the main responsibility of laying sound and strong foundations for human development.
Despite the fact that the family remains the pivot of our society, the role of Early Childhood Education continues to be extremely important and significant in terms of making major contributions to the early development of the child.
Research into the quality dimensions of Early Childhood Programmes have consistently demonstrated the importance of staff who are appropriately qualified to work with young children. Experience alone is insufficient considering that an educator of young children needs a wide range of skills, professional knowledge and guided experience in order to play varied and diverse roles.
These findings sharply point towards the need for specialized and quality teacher training programmes in the field of Early Childhood Education.
